Wheel Spacers: Everything You Need to Know

Wheel spacers are among the most popular tuning measures in Germany – and among the most effective. Just a few millimeters can noticeably change a vehicle's appearance and at the same time improve driving behavior. But what size is right? How do you install them? And do they need to be registered? In this guide, you'll find out everything you need to know about wheel spacers.

1. What are Wheel Spacers?

A wheel spacer is a metal disc mounted between the wheel hub and the rim. It pushes the wheel outwards, thus increasing the track width of the vehicle – the distance between the left and right wheel on an axle.

The effect is manifold:

  • Optics: The wheels sit flush with the bodywork or slightly beyond it. The vehicle appears wider, sportier, and more present.
  • Driving Behavior: A wider track improves cornering stability and increases rollover resistance. This effect is particularly noticeable in tall vehicles (SUVs, vans, off-road vehicles).
  • Crosswind Stability: Vehicles with a wider stance are less sensitive to crosswinds – relevant for vans, campers, and vehicles with roof loads.

2. Wheel Spacer vs. Adapter Plate – What's the Difference?

The terms wheel spacer and adapter plate are often used interchangeably but technically describe different products:

Adapter plates (also called wheel shims) are thin discs ranging from 3 to 10 mm in thickness, placed directly on the wheel hub. The rim is then fastened with the original, extended, or new wheel bolts. Adapter plates do not have their own holes for studs.

Wheel spacers (also called wheel spacers or adapter plates) are thicker – typically from 15 mm – and have their own studs or screw threads. The wheel spacer is first screwed onto the hub, and the rim is then mounted onto the wheel spacer. This creates a more stable connection than with thin adapter plates.

In practice, both terms are often mixed. In the ZR Shop, we carry both thin adapter plates and thicker wheel spacers – all with the necessary approvals.

3. Which Size? From 5 mm to 30 mm

The right size depends on the desired effect and the technical limits of your vehicle. Here's an overview:

Important: In Germany, the tire must not protrude beyond the fender edge (30-degree rule). For larger wheel spacers, fender flares are often required to comply with legal regulations.

4. Installation: Step by Step

Installing wheel spacers is generally feasible for more experienced DIY mechanics. However, if you are unsure, we always recommend going to a specialist workshop – after all, it concerns the wheel suspension and thus your safety.

Tools and Preparation

  • Jack and jack stands (never work on a vehicle supported only by a jack)
  • Torque wrench (absolutely essential)
  • Suitable sockets for wheel bolts/nuts
  • Wire brush for cleaning mating surfaces
  • If necessary, extended wheel bolts (for thin adapter plates)

Installation Instructions

  1. Secure the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level, solid surface. Apply the handbrake. Secure the opposing wheel with chocks.
  2. Remove the Wheel: Loosen wheel bolts/nuts (loosen before lifting). Lift the vehicle with a jack and place it on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. Clean the Mating Surface: Clean the hub and rim mating surface of rust and dirt with a wire brush. Clean mating surfaces are crucial for a secure fit.
  4. Mount the Wheel Spacer: Place the wheel spacer on the hub and fasten it with the enclosed screws. For thin adapter plates, this step is omitted – the disc is simply placed on.
  5. Mount the Rim: Place the rim on the wheel spacer and hand-tighten the wheel bolts/nuts.
  6. Tighten with Torque Wrench: Tighten the wheel bolts/nuts to the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer using a torque wrench. Tighten in a cross pattern.
  7. Re-tighten: After approximately 50 km of driving, re-check the wheel bolts/nuts for correct torque and re-tighten if necessary.

Attention: For wheel spacers with their own studs, two screw connections are made (wheel spacer to hub + rim to wheel spacer). Both must be tightened correctly and re-tightened after 50 km.

5. Registration: What is Necessary?

Whether registration is required depends on the type of approval. Basically, there are two ways:

Wheel Spacers with ABE (General Operating Permit)

Wheel spacers with ABE can be driven without registration in the vehicle's registration document – provided your vehicle is listed in the ABE. The ABE documents must be carried in the vehicle. This is the simplest and cheapest way. Check carefully whether your vehicle type (type key number) is listed. You can find out more about ABE and KBA numbers in our separate guide.

Wheel Spacers with Parts Certificate

Wheel spacers with a parts certificate according to §19 para. 3 StVZO must be presented to an officially recognized testing center after installation. The expert checks the correct installation, the clearance of the wheels, and compliance with the certificate. After passing the inspection, the modification is entered in the vehicle registration document.

What Happens Without Registration?

Wheel spacers without a valid ABE or without registration in the vehicle's registration document lead to the expiration of the operating permit. This means that the vehicle may no longer participate in road traffic. In the event of a check, a fine may be imposed, and in the event of an accident, insurance coverage may be lost.

6. Wheel Spacers by Bolt Pattern

Wheel spacers are bolt pattern specific – they must exactly match the bolt pattern and hub bore of your vehicle. Here are the most common bolt patterns:

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about Wheel Spacers

Do I need registration for wheel spacers?

That depends on the approval. Wheel spacers with ABE (General Operating Permit) that list your vehicle can be driven without registration – the ABE documents only need to be carried in the vehicle. Wheel spacers with a parts certificate must be registered at an officially recognized testing center after installation.

What is the maximum width a wheel spacer can be?

There is no general maximum size. The permissible width depends on the vehicle, the rim, and the space in the wheel arch. It is crucial that the tire does not protrude beyond the fender edge after installation and that there is sufficient clearance throughout the entire suspension and steering range. The permissible values are stated in the ABE or parts certificate.

Are wheel spacers safe?

Yes, provided they are correctly installed and approved. Wheel spacers with ABE or parts certificates are tested components approved for road use. Crucial is the professional installation with correct torque and the re-tightening of the wheel bolts after approx. 50 km.

What is the difference between a wheel spacer and an adapter plate?

Thin discs (3–10 mm) are called adapter plates and are placed directly between the hub and the rim. Thicker models (from approx. 15 mm) are called wheel spacers and have their own studs or threads onto which the rim is bolted separately. In practice, both terms are often used interchangeably.

Can I install wheel spacers myself?

Generally yes, provided you have the necessary tools (especially a torque wrench) and basic knowledge of changing wheels. The installation is comparable to a normal wheel change. Do wheel spacers change driving behavior?

Yes, usually positively. A wider track improves cornering stability and increases rollover resistance. However, the load on wheel bearings and chassis components also increases slightly, as the lever arm becomes longer. With moderate wheel spacers (5–20 mm), this effect is negligible.
