Tire wear: Causes, wear patterns, and how to spot feathering

Tires never wear randomly: The wear pattern reveals quite accurately what is wrong with the pressure, chassis, or driving style. Wear in the middle means too much pressure, wear on both shoulders means too little, one-sided wear indicates axle geometry issues, and a humming saw-tooth pattern results from uneven rolling. This guide shows you all typical wear patterns with their causes and remedies, explains the saw-tooth pattern in detail, and answers the question that every driving student dreads: How do you keep tire wear low?

Note: Wear patterns are strong indicators, but not a remote diagnosis. If a tire is significantly unevenly worn or the car pulls, vibrates, or hums, the cause should be checked in a workshop before new tires inherit the same defect.

1. Normal Wear: What is Common

Tires are wear parts; uniform abrasion across the entire tread is completely normal. How quickly it progresses depends on driving style, load, drive type, and tire type: Driven axles wear faster, sporty driving and frequent full loads accelerate abrasion, and soft winter compounds wear rapidly in summer. Important for evaluation: Always compare all four tires and, for each tire, the inside, middle, and outside. Only the pattern allows for diagnosis; a single measurement says little. And when looking at the tire, distinguish between two things: Abrasion (tread becoming less) and Aging (rubber becoming hard and cracked). A few words of context on the two rarer patterns. Flat spots occur when a vehicle stands motionless in the same spot for weeks or a wheel locked during emergency braking; minor cases "wear out," persistent vibration means balancing or replacement. Washouts, i.e., wave-like depressions around the circumference, are the classic sign of worn shock absorbers: The wheel bounces slightly instead of following the road, periodically grinding off rubber. 3. Saw-tooth: The Most Common Mystery Noise

The saw-tooth pattern is a stepped wear of the tread blocks: Each block edge wears obliquely; when stroked in the direction of rotation, the tread feels smooth, against the direction of rotation, it feels like a fine saw. Typically, it occurs on the non-driven axle, where the blocks can freely "snap" as they roll, favored by too low pressure, an open tread design, and a lot of uniform straight-ahead driving. It becomes audible as a low-frequency hum or drone that gets louder with speed and is often confused with a wheel bearing defect.

Not every tire is equally susceptible: Winter tires and heavily lugged all-terrain profiles with many freestanding blocks and sipes are more prone to saw-tooth wear than smooth-surfaced summer profiles, and for directional or asymmetrical tires, axle-wise swapping is the only permissible rotation; a side swap would violate the direction of rotation. The quick self-test takes ten seconds: Stroke your palm once in and once against the direction of rotation over the tread; if one direction feels significantly rougher and more stepped, you have the beginning of a saw-tooth pattern under your hand, long before it can be heard.

What helps against it: Regularly swap wheels axle-wise so that each tire runs driven alternately and the pattern wears in again, maintain correct pressure, and have the axle geometry checked if the saw-tooth pattern is pronounced. 4. Unevenly Worn: Inside vs. Outside

With one-sided wear, a precise distinction is worthwhile. Inside worn tires are typical with too much negative camber or toe-out, partly due to the design of sporty chassis, partly a consequence of worn bushings and joints. Outside worn tires result from toe-in or a lot of aggressive cornering. In both cases, wheel alignment is the right approach, because without corrected geometry, the new set will also wear unevenly.

5. Worn Tires: Limits and Consequences

Regardless of the pattern, the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters applies over the central three-quarters of the tread, but replacement is recommended significantly earlier (summer from about three, winter from about four millimeters). Driving with worn tires risks fines and penalty points, but above all, dramatically longer braking distances in wet conditions and aquaplaning. An unevenly worn tire is also ready for replacement even if the middle still has tread: Measurement is taken at the weakest point, and a tire with a bald inner shoulder is simply at the end of its life at that point.

Every tire comes with a built-in aid: the Tread Wear Indicators (TWI). These are small crossbars in the tread base, whose position on the tire edge is marked with "TWI", a triangle, or a manufacturer's symbol. If the tread is level with these bars, the legal limit of 1.6 millimeters has been reached, and the tire is definitely due for replacement, recognizable without any measuring tool.

6. Diagnosis in Five Minutes: The Inspection Routine

Once a month and before every long journey, this short routine is worthwhile, ideally with cold tires and the steering turned, so you can see the entire tread of the front tires:

1. Visual inspection of each tire across its full width: Is the wear even, or does a shoulder shine suspiciously smooth? 2. Measure tread depth at three points (inside, middle, outside) with a caliper or depth gauge, not just in one spot. 3. Palm test against the direction of rotation for saw-tooth wear. 4. Check pressure and compare with the specification for the current load. 5. Side comparison: If the left and right tires on the same axle differ significantly, it's a chassis or pressure issue, not normal wear. Those who note these five points will recognize trends over the months and will not replace too late, but also not too early out of uncertainty.

7. Keeping Wear Low: The Practical Answer to the Driving School Question

"How can you keep tire wear low?" The exam answer is: through adapted, anticipatory driving. In practice, five points are involved:

1. Check pressure monthly and adjust according to load, because incorrect pressure is the most common avoidable cause of wear. 2. Accelerate and brake gently, rapid acceleration and locking brakes wear away tread. 3. Swap wheels seasonally axle-wise so that all four age evenly. 4. Keep load within limits, continuous heavy loading increases flexing and abrasion. 5. Keep the chassis in good order, i.e., have irregularities such as pulling or vibration checked promptly. Driven in this way, modern tires achieve their engineered mileage before aging catches up, and that is ultimately the most economical answer to the wear question: The cheapest tire is the one you don't have to replace prematurely.
