Wheels for the VW Passat: Sizes, Bolt Pattern, Variant

First, the direct answer: The VW Passat has been using a 5x112 bolt pattern with a 57.1 mm hub bore and M14x1.5 wheel bolts since the B5 generation. This applies consistently to the B5, B5.5, B6, B7, B8, and the current B9. Only the really old generations differ: The B3 and B4 (1988 to 1996) used 4x100 or 5x100 depending on the engine. So, if you're looking for wheels for a Passat today, you're almost always working with the same bolt pattern – yet not every rim that states 5x112 and 57.1 mm will fit. Offset, rim width, clearance, and, especially for the Variant, load capacity are crucial. We will go through precisely these points in order.

Note: Legal status and inspection date: 18.08.2026, Germany. Permissible wheel-tire combinations are always vehicle-specific. The vehicle documents, the ABE or part certificate for the wheel, and in case of doubt, the assessment by an officially recognized testing center are decisive. This article does not replace a vehicle-specific inspection or legal advice.

Note: Brand and type designations are used here exclusively for description. zrshop is not a contractual partner, authorized dealer, or authorized service center of Volkswagen. The mention of model series does not imply manufacturer approval – the documentation of the respective wheel always remains decisive.

1. Key Data: Bolt Pattern, Hub Bore, Wheel Bolts

Three values determine whether a wheel can even be mounted on the hub. For the Passat, they are remarkably consistent:

  • 5x112 Bolt Pattern: five holes on a 112 mm pitch circle. This is a strict exclusion criterion – 5x110, 5x114.3, or 5x100 will not fit, even if the deviation seems minimal. How to correctly measure the bolt pattern and avoid the typical measurement error with five holes is explained in the guide Bolt Patterns for Rims.
  • 57.1 mm Hub Bore: the group standard for transversely mounted platforms. A larger bore on accessory wheels is the normal case and is compensated for by a centering ring (see Section 4).
  • M14x1.5 Wheel Bolts: The Passat, like most vehicles in the group, is bolted with bolts, not with nuts on studs. The length and seat type (conical or spherical) depend on the thickness of the wheel disc and are specified in the wheel's expert opinion. Changing from factory alloy to an accessory wheel or to a steel wheel may require a different bolt length. zrshop does not carry wheel bolts – please clarify this point through the wheel's expert opinion and the mounting workshop.

The fourth dimension is the offset (ET). It describes how far the wheel mounting surface is offset from the wheel center, and thus determines how deeply the wheel sits in the wheel arch. An offset that is too small pushes the wheel outwards towards the wheel arch, while an offset that is too large pushes it inwards towards the strut. Both lead to rubbing and change the load on the wheel bearing. The basics are explained in the guide Rim Offset.

2. Passat Generations at a Glance: B6, B7, B8, B9

The following table summarizes the four currently relevant generations. It shows the common connection dimensions and the range of factory-fitted wheels – i.e., the framework within which a replacement or accessory solution usually operates.

Generation Production Period Bolt Pattern Hub Bore ET Range (common) Factory Inch Sizes
B6 (Type 3C) 2005–2010 5x112 57.1 mm approx. 41–50 mm 16–18 inches
B7 (Type 362/365) 2010–2014 5x112 57.1 mm approx. 41–50 mm 16–18 inches
B8 (Type 3G, incl. Facelift) 2014–2023 5x112 57.1 mm approx. 37–49 mm 16–19 inches
B9 (current generation, Variant only) since 2023/2024 5x112 57.1 mm approx. 40–48 mm 17–19 inches

Reservation regarding the table: ET range and inch sizes are orientation values for the respective series, not an approval for your specific vehicle. Within a generation, equipment lines, engine variants, chassis variants, and brake systems sometimes differ significantly – a sporty Passat with larger brakes has a different permissible window than a basic model. Only the entries in your vehicle documents and the information in the wheel's expert opinion are binding. Which fields in registration certificate Part I are relevant for this is shown in the guide Vehicle Registration Explained; whether a specific wheel is listed for your type key can be determined via the KBA number.

Practically, the table means: A Passat B7 and a Passat B8 share the bolt pattern, hub bore, and bolt thread, so a wheel set will fit both vehicles purely geometrically. Whether it is also permissible depends on ET, width, load capacity, and brake clearance – and these differ between generations and even between two B8s with different engine variants.

3. The Variant: Load Capacity and Load Index Are Not Secondary Here

The Passat is primarily sold in Germany as a Variant – a station wagon for families, field service, and fleet operations. This is precisely what gives rise to the most important difference from a compact car: The Variant regularly travels loaded, often over long distances and frequently at high cruising speeds. Roof load, full trunk, trailer operation, four people plus luggage – this is not an exception for the Variant, but the norm. And the entire load rests on four wheel-tire combinations. Therefore, two characteristic values are not a formality here, but the actual selection criterion.

Wheel Load of the Rim

Every wheel has a permissible wheel load in kilograms, which is stated in the ABE or the parts certificate. It must be at least half of the highest permissible axle load of the vehicle. The larger of the two axle loads is decisive – and for station wagons, depending on the load, this is often the rear axle. A wheel that is perfectly adequately dimensioned for a compact car may be numerically too small for a heavier Variant with a large engine. The permissible axle loads are listed in vehicle registration certificate Part I. How to calculate this correctly step by step is explained in Calculating Rim Load Capacity.

Load Index of the Tire

In parallel, the tire carries its own characteristic value: the Load Index (LI), the two-digit number at the end of the dimension specification. It must not fall below the value required in the vehicle documents. For the Variant, this often leads to a reinforced version in many dimensions – recognizable by the addition XL or Reinforced. These tires have a higher load capacity at a correspondingly higher operating pressure. If you overlook the load index when switching to a different inch size, you create a defect that will be noticed during the main inspection and raise questions in the event of damage. The complete assignment of load index to kilograms can be found in the Load Index Table, and how to correctly read the dimension specification in Tire Size and Tire Designation Reading.

Note: Load capacity and speed index must be considered together. An XL tire only achieves its increased load capacity at the intended air pressure. If the Variant is regularly driven loaded, it does not use the comfort pressure for an empty journey, but the load pressure stored in the vehicle manufacturer's table. How to find the correct line is explained in Setting Tire Pressure Table Correctly.

What This Means for Wheel Selection

For the Variant, this means in practice: Check the wheel load before the optics. A light, delicately spoked wheel can be technically perfect – if its documented wheel load matches the axle load of your vehicle. If it doesn't, that's not negotiable, but an exclusion criterion. This check is the point where a Passat Variant wheel set differs from a Golf wheel set, even though both specify 5x112 and 57.1 mm.

4. Hub Bore 57.1 mm and Centering Rings

Factory wheels are precisely drilled to fit the vehicle's hub journal. Accessory wheels, on the other hand, are manufactured with a larger bore so that one rim model can serve multiple vehicles – typically 66.6 mm or 70.1 mm. The difference to the Passat's 57.1 mm is filled by a centering ring: a precisely manufactured plastic or aluminum ring that guides the wheel centrally on the hub before the bolts are tightened.

This is the normal case and technically unproblematic, as long as the ring precisely matches the combination of hub diameter and rim bore. A common case for the Passat is the 66.6 to 57.1 mm ring; for smaller rim bores, the 60.1 to 57.1 mm variant also occurs. How centering works and why it has nothing to do with power transmission is explained in Perfect Centering with Centering Rings; an overview of materials and use is provided in the Centering Rings Guide.

Note: The centering ring does not support the vehicle. The load is transmitted via friction between the wheel disc and the hub flange, generated by the correctly tightened wheel bolts. The ring ensures clean centering during assembly and thus smooth running. If it is missing, a vibrating steering wheel is the typical symptom. Suitable rings can be found under Centering Rings.

5. Alltrack and 4Motion: Deviating Factory Sizes

Two variants are easily miscategorized when buying wheels.

The Passat Alltrack is a Variant with a raised body, underbody protection optics, and plastic cladding on the wheel arches and sills. From the factory, it runs on comparatively high-flank tires in 17 or 18 inches – the higher flank is part of the concept and buffers unpaved surfaces. If you switch to a large inch size with a flat flank here, you lose exactly this reserve. In addition, the cladding changes the clearance in the wheel arch: The distance available to a standard Variant does not automatically apply to the Alltrack.

The 4Motion all-wheel drive does not change the bolt pattern – but it does change the weight. The additional drivetrain increases the curb weight and thus the axle loads, which directly impacts the load capacity calculation described in Section 3. In addition, 4Motion models are more frequently combined with more powerful engines and correspondingly larger brake systems, which pushes the minimum wheel dimension upwards: Below a certain inch size, the wheel simply no longer fits over the brake caliper.

Note: For all-wheel drive vehicles, all four wheels belong together. Different rolling circumferences on the front and rear axles – for example, due to significantly different tread depths or unequal dimensions – permanently stress the drivetrain. A wheel set should therefore always be changed completely and in the same dimension.

6. Platform Kinship: Golf, A3, Octavia – and Their Limits

From the B8 onwards, the Passat is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) and thus shares its connection dimensions with a whole range of group models: Golf from the seventh generation, Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon. All use 5x112 with a 57.1 mm hub bore. This is why a rim model is often offered for all these vehicles – and at the same time, it is the most common source of error when buying a used wheel set.

Identical connection dimensions are not a guarantee of fit. Three points distinguish the Passat from its smaller relatives:

  • Load Capacity: A wheel designed for a compact car may be insufficiently dimensioned for the axle load of a loaded Variant. This is the most important difference – see Section 3.
  • Brake System: Larger discs and calipers on more powerful Passat engines require more space behind the wheel disc. A small inch size that works on a Golf may fail on a Passat due to the minimum wheel dimension.
  • Wheel Arch Geometry: The Passat is wider and longer, its wheel arch is shaped differently. ET values therefore cannot simply be transferred.

Important for older vehicles: The Golf 4 uses 5x100 and is therefore not compatible with the Passat B5/B5.5 despite a similar production period. The generation overview for the compact series can be found in the separate guide Rims for VW Golf 4 to 8. Another 5x112 vehicle with a different hub bore is the Audi A4 of younger generations – how this affects it is explained in Rims for the Audi A4. And how rim width and tire width relate when you go from 17 to 18 or 19 inches is explained in Rim and Tire Width and the 18-inch Guide.

Which Brands in the Shop Are Relevant for 5x112

zrshop carries several rim programs that cover the 5x112 bolt pattern – including DEZENT, AEZ, DOTZ, BORBET, RC Design, and Brock. Whether a specific model is listed and documented in the required combination of inch size, width, ET, and wheel load for your Passat is determined by the respective data sheet of the wheel – not the brand. Therefore, use the wheel load specifications and the vehicle assignment of the wheel as a filter before choosing by design. For color choice, the guide Black Rims: Matt, Glossy, Gunmetal provides orientation.

7. Winter Wheels for the Passat

For the cold season, the same logic applies to the Passat as to most mid-range vehicles: one inch size smaller than in summer, but with more sidewall. If you drive 18 or 19 inches in summer, you often end up with 16 or 17 inches in winter. The reasons are practical: The higher cross-section absorbs potholes better, a slightly narrower tread creates more surface pressure on snow, and the smaller dimension is more widely available. The lower limit is set by the brake system – for the B8 and B9 with a large engine, 16 inches may no longer be feasible depending on the version.

In addition to a second set of alloy wheels, steel wheels are an option for winter. They handle road salt and curb contact more easily and are uncomplicated to replace. Whether a steel wheel in the required dimension is listed for your Passat depends on the generation, brake system, and minimum wheel dimension – this is a case-by-case assessment, not a general statement. The range can be found under ALCAR Steel Wheels, the matching tires under Winter Tires and All-Season Tires. How to put together a sensible winter wheel set is explained in the Winter Complete Wheel Guide, and why summer tires are not an option in winter is clarified in Driving Winter Tires in Summer.

Regarding the tire pressure monitoring system: It belongs to the vehicle, not the wheel type. Depending on the year of manufacture and equipment, the Passat is delivered with a direct or indirect measuring system. For a direct measuring system, every mounted wheel set needs functional sensors – either converted from the summer wheel or as a second set. For an indirect measuring system, there is no sensor in the wheel; here it is sufficient to re-initialize the system after changing the wheels and after every pressure correction. Which system is installed is stated in the onboard literature. Details are explained in the guide Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems; sensors can be found under TPMS. Seasonal wheel changes including torque and retightening rules are described in Changing and Storing Wheels.

8. Registration: what you clarify before buying

Whether a wheel-tire combination for the Passat requires registration cannot be answered generally – it depends on the documentation of the specific wheel and your vehicle. The basic structure is as follows:

  • If the combination is already listed in the vehicle documents, it is permissible without further action.
  • If the wheel has an ABE (General Operating Permit) and your vehicle is listed in it, operation is permissible within the conditions specified therein. The ABE must be carried. Conditions may require additional work, such as processing wheel arch edges or using specific tire types.
  • If only a parts certificate is available, a modification approval according to §19 para. 3 StVZO by an officially recognized test center is required; subsequently, the documents are corrected.

What always applies: The information must match your vehicle – type key numbers, axle loads, permissible tire dimensions. A wheel approved for a Passat B8 is therefore not automatically approved for a B9 or for a different engine. The process of an approval is described in the guide Registering rims. A binding statement for your vehicle can only be made by the test center based on the documents and the wheel certificate – not by this article and not by a product description.

FAQ: Rims for the VW Passat

What is the bolt circle of the VW Passat?

From generation B5 to the current B9 consistently 5x112 with a hub bore of 57.1 mm and wheel bolts M14x1.5. Only the older generations B3 and B4 differ and run on 4x100 or 5x100 depending on the engine.

What rim size fits the Passat B8?

From the factory, the B8 was delivered with 16 to 19 inches, depending on the equipment line and engine. The brake system limits the minimum wheel dimension downwards, and the clearance in the wheel arch and the permissible tire dimension upwards. Which sizes are approved for your specific vehicle can be found in the vehicle documents and the wheel certificate.

Do Golf 7 rims fit the Passat?

Geometrically yes – both use 5x112 with 57.1 mm. However, this does not answer the technical question: the Passat, especially as a loaded Variant, has higher axle loads. The documented wheel load of the wheel must at least correspond to half of the maximum permissible axle load. In addition, there are ET, rim width and the clearance for the brake system. A Golf wheel set must therefore be checked on a case-by-case basis and is not generally transferable.

Do I need centering rings for the Passat?

Usually yes, if you use aftermarket rims. Their hub bore is usually larger than the 57.1 mm of the vehicle – typically 66.6 or 70.1 mm. The appropriate ring compensates for the difference and ensures centered mounting. Factory wheels are already drilled to 57.1 mm and do not require a ring.

What should I pay particular attention to with the Passat Variant?

Load capacity and load index. The Variant often drives loaded, which means that the axle loads – often on the rear axle – are high. The wheel load of the rim must match, and the tire needs at least the load index required in the documents, so in many dimensions a reinforced XL version with the corresponding operating pressure.

9. Conclusion

With the Passat, the follow-up question is quickly clarified: 5x112, 57.1 mm, M14x1.5 – unchanged from B5 to B9. The real work begins afterwards. Offset and rim width decide whether the wheel runs freely in the wheel arch; the brake system sets the lower limit of the inch size; and with the Variant, the load capacity is the point where a suitable wheel set separates from one that only visually fits. If you check these four values against the vehicle documents and the wheel certificate before ordering, you have essentially made the decision. Everything else – design, color, brand – is then a matter of taste, and that can be clarified relaxed.
